It was March 2019 when a stray pit bull mix came into the Manatee County Animal Services. The dog clearly had once had a home. However, for some reason, her owner vanished without a trace.
No one could tell where the dog came from and how long she has been missing. The shelter’s outreach and events specialist, Hans Wohlgefahrt, said that the pup had a microchip. So, they learned that her former owner’s name was Monica Mathis. Unfortunately, though, they could not reach her.

They named the dog Day Day. She quickly became a volunteer favorite. Hans describes Day Day as a tank that has a heart of gold. He said that this pup enjoys playing and rolling around. She also loves attention and always wants to be petted. Although Day Day is such a friendly and happy dog, no potential adopters seemed to have taken much interest in her.
With hundreds of animals in the shelter, Day Day easily got lost in the crowd. The shelter staff knew that she needed help. So, when the rescue center and the Motorworks Brewing needed some “spokesdogs” for the campaign that they were working on, the staff members nominated Day Day.
The campaign was an instant hit. Two out of four dogs that were featured in the beer can immediately found a home, but Day Day did not. Meanwhile, Monica was at home in Saint Paul, Minnesota, watching the television. Suddenly, she saw the beer can with Day Day’s smiling face on it. Monica immediately recognized that it was Hazel, the dog that she lost three years ago when they were living in Iowa.
Monica immediately contacted the shelter, and they were able to confirm that Day Day and Hazel are the same. The staff members were so thrilled that Day Day’s family would now be complete again. According to Hans, Hazel has been part of Monica’s family since the day she was born. There could be no better ending to their story than this.
